Conversing and inquiring about someone's personal background When you want to know about someone's personal background (e.g.,
hometown
or the country s/he comes from), the question ¾îµð¼ ¿À¼Ì¾î¿ä? 'Where are
you from?' is often used (¾îµð¼ is a shortened form of
¾îµð¿¡¼). The
response to this question is '(place/location)¿¡¼ ¿Ô¾î¿ä'>/font>, as shown in
the following structure:
(1) ½ºÆ¼ºê: Àú´Â ¹Ì±¹¿¡¼ ¿Ô¾î¿ä. ¸¶Å©¾¾´Â ¾îµð¼ ¿À¼Ì¾î¿ä?
When you specify a town or a city you came from along with the country,
the larger unit (e.g., country) should precede the smaller unit (e.g.,
city). For example, (1) in the above can be made more specific as follows:
(2) ½ºÆ¼ºê: Àú´Â ¹Ì±¹ ´º¿å¿¡¼ ¿Ô¾î¿ä. ¸¶Å©¾¾´Â ¾îµð¼ ¿À¼Ì¾î¿ä?
Instead of ¾îµð¼ ¿À¼Ì¾î¿ä?, °íÇâÀÌ ¾îµð¿¹¿ä? 'Where is your hometown?'
can be used.
A: °íÇâÀÌ ¾îµð¿¹¿ä?
Note that ¾îµð¿¹¿ä? and ¾îµð ÀÖ¾î¿ä? are sometimes interchangeable.
However, in the case of °íÇâ 'hometown', °íÇâÀÌ ¾îµð ÀÖ¾î¿ä? is
unacceptable.
In general, movable objects such as 'book' (Ã¥) are not used in ¾îµð¿¹¿ä?,
but used in ¾îµð ÀÖ¾î¿ä? form.
