Asking and giving directions

When you want to ask for directions on the street in Korea, it is best to start with ½Ç·ÊÇÕ´Ï´Ù 'Excuse me', a polite way to seek someone's attention. People on the street will expect this expression to be followed by an inquiry concerning directions, and hence will be ready for it. ¸»¾¸ Á» ¹¯°Ú½À´Ï´Ù (lit. 'I will ask you something') can immediately follow ½Ç·ÊÇÕ´Ï´Ù.

(1) A: Àú, ½Ç·ÊÇÕ´Ï´Ù. ¸»¾¸ Á» ¹¯°Ú½À´Ï´Ù.
 B: ³×.
 A: ÀÌ ±Ùó¿¡ ¿ìü±¹ÀÌ ¾îµð ÀÖ¾î¿ä?
 B: ÀºÇà ¿·¿¡ ÀÖ¾î¿ä.

(Note: Àú... is used at the beginning of conversation to get the other person's attention, and also for hesitation.)

When you want to get more specific directions, you may ask ¾î¶»°Ô °¡¿ä? For instance,
 
(2) A: ¿©±â¼­ ¾î¶»°Ô °¡¿ä? 'How do I go from here?'
 B: ÀÌ ±æ·Î Âß °¡¼¼¿ä.      'Go straight.'
    ±×·³ ¿À¸¥ÂÊ¿¡ ÀÖ¾î¿ä.    'Then it is on your right side.'
 A: °¨»çÇÕ´Ï´Ù.

(À¸)·Î °¡¼¼¿ä 'Go toward the direction of...' is often used to give directions. More expressions about direction:
